The blackeye thicklip wrasse, Hemigymnus melapterus, is also called the half-and-half wrasse. Juveniles and adults look markedly different, and the fish's eventual growth is a major consideration when planning its permanent aquarium. Fishes of Australia reports growth to 45 cm in total length, so an adult needs substantial turning and swimming space.
This sand-searching predator needs generous swimming room, substantial rock shelters and a suitable deep substrate. It takes sand into its mouth while finding small animals, so keep loose décor secure. Provide regular marine meaty meals and confirm the individual is eating a sustainable aquarium diet before bringing it home.
Small fish and crustaceans can be eaten, and another thicklip may be treated as a territorial rival. Choose substantial, compatible companions and keep a close watch on feeding competition. Fit a secure cover, while leaving enough interior room for the wrasse to turn and retreat comfortably.
