Black Cardinalfish

The black cardinalfish, Apogonichthyoides melas, has subdued mottled colours and a dark marking on the rear dorsal fin. Its quiet behaviour is well suited to a carefully stocked marine aquarium with shaded places to retreat during brighter parts of the day.

Create caves and ledges without eliminating open swimming space. Offer small marine meaty foods near its shelter, and watch that each portion is actually eaten. A fish that rests during the day may feed more confidently when lighting is reduced and active tankmates are less competitive.

Pair this deliberate swimmer with peaceful companions. Fast, persistent feeders can leave it underfed even when food is entering the aquarium regularly. Its calm appearance should not be taken as evidence that an arbitrary group or an unverified pair will remain compatible.
