Black Bar Chromis

The black bar chromis, Chromis retrofasciata, has a yellow-toned body marked by a dark band near the tail. It is a compact reef fish that uses the space around shelter rather than needing an aquarium packed solidly with rock.

Provide an established marine aquarium with crevices for retreat and clear swimming areas. Offer appropriately small meaty foods along with balanced marine preparations in several portions through the day. Water movement can carry food past the fish, but it should still have quieter places to rest.

Choose companions that will allow it to feed and return to cover without constant chasing. The general image of chromis as schooling fish does not guarantee that any number will coexist in a confined aquarium. Monitor access to shelter and food if keeping more than one.
