Banana Wrasse

The banana wrasse, Thalassoma lutescens, is an energetic predator whose colour changes as it matures. Its activity and eventual growth make a large aquarium with long swimming routes more appropriate than a crowded display selected around its purchase size. An adult can approach 30 cm (12 inches), so its energetic swimming needs substantial space.

Secure the rockwork because this wrasse searches around rubble for food and can move loose pieces. Provide suitable sand for shelter and a tightly fitted cover. Feed varied marine meaty foods in regular portions, with filtration and maintenance capable of handling an enthusiastic feeder.

Snails, crabs, shrimp and other small invertebrates can become food. Timid fish may also struggle with its persistent activity at feeding time. Assess tankmates for both size and confidence, and avoid assuming that another wrasse will share its territory peacefully.
