Ambon Scorpionfish

The Ambon scorpionfish, Pteroidichthys amboinensis, is a camouflaged ambush predator that spends much of its time on the bottom. It suits an aquarist prepared to maintain a quiet, carefully planned habitat and monitor an animal that may be difficult to spot among rubble and vegetation.

Provide sheltered rockwork, soft substrate and areas protected from forceful flow. Its feeding needs deserve attention before purchase: newly introduced fish may refuse prepared food and require suitable live crustaceans. Offer marine meaty foods where the fish can see and capture them, and remove uneaten portions.

Small fish and ornamental crustaceans are potential prey. Choose peaceful companions too large to swallow, and avoid fish that nip at a stationary resident. Its venomous spines also require care during maintenance; locate the fish before working near its hiding place.
