Choosing Tang

Tangs are active surgeonfish that need an aquarium planned for their adult size and movement. Compare the individual species’ eventual dimensions, swimming habits, and space requirements. A juvenile’s current length should not be used as the sole guide to whether it belongs in a particular aquarium.

Provide appropriate marine algae foods as part of the feeding plan and compare species-specific dietary requirements. Rockwork can provide grazing surfaces and shelter, but the layout must also leave room to swim. Consider how multiple grazing fish will share both food and space.

Compatibility between tangs requires care, particularly with similar species or established territories. Send your current stocking list and aquarium dimensions before selecting another individual. Tangs also have sharp structures near the tail, so plan handling and transfer carefully and seek guidance if you have not kept this group before.
