SPS coral for reef aquariums

SPS is an aquarium grouping for small-polyp stony corals, not a single care category. Acropora, Montipora, birdsnest and other types differ in sensitivity, growth form and the light or flow they need. Identify the coral before deciding which part of the reef suits it.

Many SPS demand substantial circulation and bright light, but acclimation and stable conditions matter as much as intensity. Allow room for branches or plates to grow without shading neighbours or blocking flow. As the reef develops, inspect the base and inner structure rather than judging only the exposed tips.

Skeletal growth consumes calcium and alkalinity, so monitor the aquarium's changing demand and maintain consistent chemistry. Match supplementary food to the identified coral's needs. A successful SPS layout leaves enough access for observation and maintenance as well as space for each colony to expand.
