Soft coral for reef aquariums

Soft corals offer flexible branches, broad leather-like forms and spreading polyp mats. Choose a type whose eventual shape fits the aquarium: a small leather frag can become a shading colony, while an encrusting mat may spread onto nearby rockwork.

Many familiar photosynthetic soft corals suit moderate reef lighting and circulation that keeps their surfaces clean. Acclimate gradually, secure the frag, and leave enough room for full extension. Check the specific coral's feeding needs because the soft-coral grouping also includes demanding filter feeders that cannot live on light alone.

Some leathers periodically contract and shed a surface film; good surrounding flow helps clear it. Keep growing colonies from crowding or shading neighbours and observe their interaction with stony corals. Match routine feeding and maintenance to the identified animal rather than assuming every soft coral behaves like the first one in your reef.
