Reverse osmosis and deionization prepare purified source water for aquarium use. Sediment and carbon stages protect the membrane, the RO membrane removes much of the dissolved material, and DI resin further polishes the product water. Each stage has a separate job and replacement requirement.

Choose a system for the amount of water needed and the conditions of the supply. Source pressure, temperature and dissolved-solids level affect production, so the rated daily output is not a guarantee under every installation. Check cartridge dimensions, membrane capacity and compatible flow-control parts when selecting replacements.

Monitor product-water quality and maintain prefilters according to the system instructions. Compare readings before and after the relevant stages when investigating performance. For saltwater water changes, prepare RO/DI water with an appropriate salt mix. Replace evaporated water with unsalted RO/DI to avoid raising salinity. Freshwater water-change preparation depends on the livestock and may require remineralization.
