Aquarium powerheads and wave makers

Powerheads and circulation pumps move water within the display, helping shape the flow around the aquascape. Choose them for the tank dimensions and the animals' needs. A concentrated outlet, broad propeller flow and alternating wave pattern can create different conditions even at similar stated flow rates.

Check mounting compatibility with the aquarium's panel thickness, then consider how far the pump projects into the swimming space. Position flow to reach sheltered areas without continuously blowing sand or pressing delicate coral tissue in one direction. Adjustable direction and output can make this easier to tune.

Keep intakes away from loose material and vulnerable animals, and use only compatible protective accessories. Remove deposits and debris regularly. Reassess placement as corals grow or the rockwork changes, because the same pump setting can produce a different flow pattern in a more crowded aquarium.
