Mushroom coral for reef tanks

Mushroom corals are corallimorphs with fleshy discs, and their care varies among Rhodactis, Discosoma and Ricordea. Choose by the identified type and the space available for an expanded disc, not only by a trade name or the size of its mounting plug.

Sheltered circulation is useful for many mushrooms; excessive flow can prevent expansion or cause detachment. Light needs vary, with many Rhodactis and Discosoma suited to subdued positions while some Ricordea tolerate brighter conditions after acclimation. Avoid sudden increases and assess the individual animal's response.

Photosynthesis supplies energy, and appropriately sized marine foods may be accepted as a supplement. Feeding behaviour differs, so use small portions rather than forcing food onto the mouth. Leave room for growth, keep sediment away from attachment points, and prevent spreading mushrooms from shading or contacting delicate neighbouring corals.
