Purple Gonipora (M)

Purple Goniopora is a stony flowerpot coral that develops a moving canopy when its polyps extend. The M label should be checked against the current specimen's dimensions before choosing its position; reserve space around the expanded colony as well as under its base.

A moderate-light starting position and broad, variable circulation help with acclimation. Keep it away from repeated physical contact, which can trigger rapid withdrawal. Observe the colony over time instead of repeatedly relocating it whenever its extension changes during the day.

This coral combines photosynthesis with capture of very small foods. Fine zooplankton is a useful supplement, whereas phytoplankton alone does not meet its direct feeding needs. Maintaining tissue condition and a sustained feeding response requires more attention than many common soft corals, so it belongs in an established reef with an attentive keeper.
