Torch coral for reef tanks

Torch corals are long-tentacled stony corals that need open space around each expanded head. Choose one by its current tissue condition, skeletal form and room available in your reef, rather than assuming a named colour variety changes its basic care requirements.

Start with moderate light and acclimate gradually. Indirect, variable circulation should let the tentacles sway without folding them onto the skeleton. Photosynthesis supplies much of their energy; small marine foods can supplement it when captured. Keep reef conditions consistent and investigate persistent retraction or tissue loss promptly.

Torches are particularly important to separate from hammers, frogspawn and other neighbouring corals. Their stinging reach can increase after dark and with changes in flow. Plan a generous initial gap, observe actual extension, and preserve that space as every colony in the area grows.
