Protein skimmers for reef aquariums

A protein skimmer removes some suspended and dissolved organic material from marine aquarium water by collecting it in foam. Select a skimmer for the system's livestock load and feeding level as well as its water volume. Manufacturer ratings can differ for fish-only, mixed-reef and heavily stocked coral systems.

Check practical fit before comparing capacity: sump compartment dimensions, recommended operating depth, total height and clearance to lift out the collection cup. A stable operating water level makes adjustment more consistent. Confirm whether the selected model has separate pump or controller requirements.

Allow time for a new skimmer to settle in, then make small adjustments while observing the foam. Clean the cup neck, air path and pump regularly. A skimmer works alongside mechanical filtration and routine maintenance; it does not remove every dissolved substance.
