Aquarium pumps for reef systems

Aquarium pumps should be selected for the flow required at the end of the installation. A return pump must lift water and overcome resistance from hoses, pipes, elbows and equipment. Its advertised maximum flow is therefore different from the flow a finished sump-to-display system may receive.

Compare the manufacturer's flow curve with the vertical lift and plumbing route. Check inlet and outlet connections, physical footprint and whether the model permits submerged, external or both installation methods. Keep the return rate within the overflow's working capacity.

Adjustable output can help tune the system, but controller requirements vary by model. Leave enough room to remove the pump for cleaning, keep its intake clear, and support the plumbing so it does not pull against the pump housing.
