Choosing Hammer coral for reef tanks
Hammer corals are identified by their flattened tentacle tips and occur in both branching and wall growth forms. Check that structure when selecting a specimen: it affects the shape of the expanded colony, how it grows and how much clear space the placement needs.
Start with moderate illumination and gradual acclimation. Broad, variable circulation should move the tentacles without holding their flesh against the skeleton. Secure the base and avoid squeezing inflated polyps during handling. Photosynthesis provides substantial nutrition, and small marine foods can be tried sparingly if accepted.
Reserve room around the open tissue and possible sweepers, then reassess as surrounding colonies grow. Keep torches out of reach even when arranging similar-looking LPS together. Persistent contraction or tissue loss calls for examining local flow, contact and water conditions rather than immediately adding stronger light or more food.
