Gorgonian

Choose a gorgonian by its feeding mode before choosing its colour or branching shape. Photosynthetic sea fans and sea rods can obtain substantial energy from light; nonphotosynthetic types such as those sold as Blueberry Gorgonian depend on frequent capture of suspended food.

For photosynthetic varieties, provide appropriate reef lighting after acclimation and enough circulation to keep the branches clear of sediment. Secure the base and leave space so branches do not rub against rock or neighbouring corals. Fine suspended foods may supplement their diet.

Nonphotosynthetic gorgonians require a feeding plan and filtration capable of managing the extra food load. A low-light position does not make them low-maintenance animals. Confirm the identity of unfamiliar sea whips, including their temperature needs, and judge success by sustained polyp activity and intact tissue over time rather than a brief opening response.
