Filter media perform different jobs. Mechanical media trap particles, biological media provide surfaces for filtration bacteria, and chemical media target particular dissolved substances. Start with the problem you want to address instead of treating every cartridge or bag of media as interchangeable.

Match replacement parts to the filter model and check the space and water path available for loose media. Pads that fit poorly can let water bypass them, while overpacked baskets can restrict circulation. A chemical medium should suit both the aquarium type and the substance you intend to remove.

Clean collected debris before it accumulates heavily, while handling established biological media gently to preserve its bacteria. Follow each product's replacement or regeneration instructions. A basket, impeller or seal also needs the correct model fit to restore reliable filter operation.
