Butterflyfish require a careful look at diet and reef compatibility before purchase. Some investigate coral or other attached invertebrates as food, and species differ in how readily they adapt to aquarium meals.

Assess the exact species, adult swimming needs and the foods you can provide consistently. An established rockscape with shelter helps a new fish settle, but natural foraging alone is not a dependable feeding plan. Check whether the fish's diet conflicts with prized coral, anemones or other reef animals before choosing it for a mixed display.
